Department Introduces New Division of Clinical Epidemiology and Evaluative Sciences Research

The Department of Medicine is pleased to announce the formation of a new Division within the Department of Medicine, the Division of Clinical Epidemiology and Evaluative Sciences Research, which will be headed by Dr. Mary Charlson, the William T. Foley Distinguished Professor in Medicine.

The new Division of Clinical Epidemiology and Evaluative Sciences Research will encompass several related areas of investigation, including studies to improve clinical outcomes; behavioral science research; health disparities (under the leadership of Dr. Carla Boutin-Foster); research on complex patients with a significant burden of comorbidity; and comparative effectiveness. In order to stimulate and support new evaluative sciences research within and outside the Department of Medicine, the new Division will house consultative services to investigators, including informatics support as well as the currently existing training programs in clinical epidemiology and research methodology. Until now, these core services and training programs were housed in the Division of General Internal Medicine.

Dr. Charlson, who is also Executive Director of Cornell University's Center for Complementary and Integrative Medicine, is an internationally recognized clinical epidemiologist and methodologist. Among her many original contributions, she has pioneered new strategies for improving outcomes in patients with chronic illness, including the widely used Charlson Comorbidity Index. The clinical operation of WCIMA, under the leadership of Dr. Judy Tung, will remain in the Division of General Internal Medicine.
