Dr. Ari Melnick receives Clinical Scientist Award in Translational Research from the Borroughs Wellcome Foundation (BWF)

Dr. Ari Melnick is the receipient of a Clinical Scientist Award in Translational Research from the Borroughs Wellcome Foundation (BWF), which will provide $750,000 over a period of five years ($150,000 per year). Dr. Melnick's award is one of four conferred by BWF in 2009.

The program's goal is to foster the development and productivity of established independent physician-scientists who will strengthen translational research through their own studies as well as by mentoring physician-scientist trainees. The awards are intended to give recipients the freedom and flexibility to explore fundamental scientific questions, to apply the resulting knowledge at the bedside, and to bring insights from the clinical setting back to the laboratory for further exploration. BWF hopes these efforts will lead to a better understanding of disease mechanisms and to new methods of diagnosing, treating, and preventing disease.

Dr. Melnick's research is focused on developing a new class of therapeutic agents for patients with B-cell lymphomas, targeting a factor known as MTA3, which when present in lymphoma cells causes them to to acquire the malignant behavior and ignore normal developmental cues. This research will be performed by physician-scientist trainees working with Dr. Melnick and will allow them to develop their own independent research careers.
