Sandra M. Hall-Ross, MD, Assistant Professor of Clinical Medicine and Assistant Attending Physician, has been named Physician of the Year by NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital’s Department of Nursing. Established in 2005, the award recognizes physicians who exemplify a spirit of collegiality and collaboration with the nursing staff.

Each fall, the hospital nursing staff submit applications nominating doctors with whom they work for Physician of the Year. Letters of support are solicited for each nomination and the Nursing Excellence Awards and Recognition Committee — comprising registered nurses, staff nurses, nurse clinicians, nurse educators, nurse managers, recruiters and nursing directors — chooses the awardees. Dr. Hall-Ross, one of six recipients this year, was selected for her "open-minded, objective and inclusive approach" to patient care with the nursing staff, according to Patricia Deely, Nurse Clinician at Weill Cornell Internal Medicine Associates (WCIMA) and a member of the award committee. "Dr. Hall-Ross genuinely understands the contributions made by others in the patient care process and invariably approaches the nurses with professionalism and respect," Ms. Deely says. "The nursing staff feels very comfortable discussing care alternatives with her, which consistently leads to better patient outcomes."

An alumna of Harvard University and Weill Cornell Medical College, Dr. Hall-Ross completed her training in internal medicine at NewYork-Presbyterian and worked at the Long Island City Community Practice for five years before joining WCIMA in 2000. Outside her general internal medicine and primary care practice, she has been active in the development of nursing educational programs as well as programs to promote the recruitment of minority medical students and physicians to Weill Cornell.
