Department of Medicine Hematologists Present Findings at 51st Annual Meeting of the American Society of Hematology

Leading hematologists in the Department of Medicine presented new basic and clinical research findings at the 51st Annual Meeting of the American Society of Hematology (ASH) in New Orleans, December 5–8.

 

Dr. Cilmi Appointed Associate Program Director for Department of Medicine Residency Program

The Department of Medicine is pleased to announce that Sal Cilmi, MD, has been appointed an Associate Program Director for the Department of Medicine's residency program. Dr. Cilmi will continue to serve as a full-time member of the department's Division of Hospital Medicine.

 

The SASS Foundation Visiting Professorship: December 3

On Thursday, December 3, the SASS Foundation for Medical Research and Weill Cornell Medical College, along with Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory, presented a scientific symposium from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. on the Weill Cornell campus.

 

Division of Nephrology and Hypertension Present at the 42nd Annual Meeting and Scientific Exposition of the American Society of Nephrology

The Division of Nephrology and Hypertension, Department of Medicine and Department of Transplant Medicine, presented several significant research presentations at the 42nd Annual Meeting and Scientific Exposition of the American Society of Nephrology (ASN), which took place October 27 to November 1 in San Diego.

 

B.H. Kean-Boxer Family Foundation Lecture in Global Health

The annual B.H. Kean-Boxer Family Foundation Lecture in Global Health took place at Medical Grand Rounds October 20 in Uris Auditorium. The speaker was D.A. Henderson, MD, MPH, ScD, of The John Hopkins University. The topic of this year's lecture was "Smallpox: Death of a Disease." Dr. Henderson led the global smallpox eradication campaign that ended successfully in 1980 when the World Health Organization declared the world smallpox free. His presentation explored the long and successful history of smallpox eradication worldwide.

 

Department of Medicine Research Partnership with Soochow University

On October 12, 2009, the Department of Medicine signed a Letter of Intent to establish a research collaboration with the First Affiliated Hospital of Soochow University in Suzhou, China.


 

Department Introduces New Division of Clinical Epidemiology and Evaluative Sciences Research

The Department of Medicine is pleased to announce the formation of a new division within the Department of Medicine, the Division of Clinical Epidemiology and Evaluative Sciences Research, which will be headed by Mary Charlson, MD, the William T. Foley Distinguished Professor in Medicine.

Deborah Lafer Scher Appointed Strategic Advisor to the Chairman, Department of Medicine

The Department of Medicine is pleased to announce the appointment of Deborah Lafer Scher as Strategic Advisor to the Chair of the Department of Medicine. The major focus of this position is to assist the Chairman and the department's leadership in planning and implementing academic and clinical initiatives of the highest strategic importance to the department.

Dr. Boutin-Foster to Lead Comprehensive Center of Excellence in Disparities Research and Community Engagement at Weill Cornell

Carla Boutin-Foster, MD,MS, of the Division of General Internal Medicine was awarded $8 million in funding for a five-year period from the National Center on Minority Health and Health Disparities (NCMHD), a division of the National Institutes of Health, to support a Comprehensive Center of Excellence in Disparities Research and Community Engagement (CEDREC). The new center will be a consortium between Weill Cornell Medical College, Hunter College School of Nursing, City University of New York, Lincoln Medical and Mental Health Center, and the Center for Healthful Behavior Change at New York University School of Medicine.

In Memoriam: Desiree Pardi

The Department of Medicine is saddened to announce that Desiree Pardi, MD, PhD, died peacefully on Sunday, September 6, 2009.Dr. Pardi was an inspiration to all of us, enriching our lives and making us all better for having had the privilege and joy of working with her.

Dr. Lachs to Lead NYC's First Elder Abuse Center

The Department of Medicine is proud to announce that Mark S. Lachs, MD, MPH, Co-Chief of the Division of Geriatrics and Gerontology in the Department of Medicine, will serve as Executive Director of the new Elder Abuse Center at NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital/Weill Cornell Medical Center.

Cancer Stem Cell Biologist Monica L. Guzman Appointed to Faculty

Monica L. Guzman, PhD, an investigator in the rapidly developing area of cancer stem cells, was appointed Assistant Professor of Medicine and Pharmacology on July 1, 2009. Dr. Guzman is widely regarded as a pioneer and expert in devising therapies that target leukemia stem cells.

Why African Americans Are at Greater Risk of Hypertension and Kidney Disease: Study Finds Growth Factor Higher in Blacks than Whites

Physician-scientists Manikkam Suthanthiran, MB, and Phyllis August, MD, both from the Division of Nephrology and Hypertension of the Department of Medicine, believe that a heightened level of a certain growth factor in the blood may explain why black people have a greater prevalence of hypertension and kidney disease than white people.

Dr. Ko Receives $2.8 million NIH Grant to Develop Rapid Diagnostic Test for Leptospirosis.

Albert Ko, MD, of the Division of Infectious Diseases of the Department of Medicine, received this grant in collaboration with Chembio Diagnostic Systems, a US company serving the increasing global demand for rapid tests needed for the prevention and treatment of infectious diseases and other conditions.

Dr. Martin Joins Division of Hematology/Medical Oncology Faculty

Peter Martin, MD, will be joining the faculty of the Division of Hematology/Medical Oncology as Assistant Professor of Medicine on May 1, 2009. He will be seeing patients at the Center for Lymphoma and Myeloma and will be working with Eric Feldman, John P. Leonard, and other faculty in the area of hematological malignancies.

Physicians from The Jay Monahan Center for Gastrointestinal Health at NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital/Weill Cornell Medical Center will reveal the most up-to-date information on colorectal cancer screening guidelines, risk factors, and risk reduction. In addition, Katie Couric of CBS Evening News will be on hand to answer questions about colorectal cancer and the importance of screening, early detection, and prevention.

Warren D. Johnson, Jr. Medical Center Inaugurated in Haiti

On February 10, Warren D. Johnson, Jr., former Chief of the Division of Infectious Diseases and now Director of the Center for Global Health within the Department of Medicine, was honored during an inauguration ceremony in which a new clinical facility was named after him in Port au Prince, Haiti: The Warren D. Johnson, Jr. Medical Center.

Dr. Andersen to Lead Education and Outreach at Ronald O. Perelman Heart Institute

Holly S. Andersen, MD, of the Division of Cardiology in the Department of Medicine at Weill Cornell Medical College, has been appointed Director of Education and Outreach at the new Ronald O. Perelman Heart Institute of NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital/Weill Cornell Medical Center. The newly created position underscores the institute's strong commitment to raising awareness about the risks of heart disease.

Department of Medicine Welcomes Dr. Tung as Interim Director, Weill Cornell Internal Medicine Associates

Robert Meyer, MD, is stepping down as Director of Weill Cornell Internal Medicinel Associates (WCIMA) after a remarkably successful tenure in that position. WCIMA has become a role model for general internal medicine teaching practices in academic medical centers around the country with its unique blend of payer mix, faculty excellence, and resident education.

Roy (Trip) Gulick Appointed Chief, Division of Infectious Diseases

Following a national search, Roy (Trip) Gulick, MD, MPH, has been appointed Chief of the Division of Infectious Diseases in the Department of Medicine at Weill Cornell Medical College and NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital/Weill Cornell Medical Center, effective January 1, 2009. Dr. Gulick succeeds Warren D. Johnson, Jr., the B.H. Kean Professor of Tropical Medicine, who will assume the directorship of a new Center for Global Health within the Division of Infectious Diseases.
