Cytokine Levels in Hypertensive and Normotensive Individuals

Study Status

Closed to Enrollment

Study Description

High blood pressure (hypertension) is a common problem and is associated with several complications such as heart disease, kidney failure and stroke.  There are a number of drugs available to treat hypertension.  However, the drugs are expensive, have significant side effects, and do not eliminate many of the consequences of hypertension.  Recent studies of hyertensive patients have identified several hormonal causes of hypertension, and also the genes that might predispose people to high blood pressure.  Depsite this new information, the cause of hypertension in most instances remains unidentified.

We are conducting this research study to discover the cause of hypertension.  We suspect that certain natural substances present in everyone's blood may play a role in high blood pressure when present in excessive levels.  In order to perform our studies, we need to obtain 2-3 tablespoons (1 tablespoon = 15 ml) of blood.  This is the only intervention to be performed for the purposes of this study.  There will be a nominal monetary compensation for study subjects.
