Study Status

Open to Enrollment

Study Description

SCALE is a five year study (October 1, 2009 through June 30, 2014) funded by NHLBI that focuses on promoting small changes in eating behavior and increasing physical activity among Black and Latino participants in Harlem and the South Bronx.  The study will examine the possiblity and acceptance of a small changes eating intervention in African American and Latino partipants.  We will test whether positive thinking can protect participants against the negative impact that stress and depression can have on making positive behavior changes such as eating healthy and engaging in physical activiity.

During the current pilot phase, we will test the heatlhy eating intervention with participants engaging in mindful eating and physical activity, with or without a postive affect self affirmation component in each setting.  Our goal during the pilot testing of this intervention is to determine the optimal timing of the introduction of physical activity and behavior contracting and the effectiveness of the positive affect/self affirmation component.  Ultimately the goal of this project is to further enhance the eating behavior intervention.
